West Cork schools will benefit from announcements made last Thursday by Education Minister Mary Hanafin, confirmed local Fianna Fail Dáil candidate Councillor Christy O’Sullivan.
Kinsale Community College and Clonakilty Community College can now proceed to architectural and planning stage for their much-needed extensions. Mr. O’Sullivan commented, “The announcement will be of huge relief to teachers and students in the two schools and the parents who have been lobbying hard for the go-ahead for these works. I hope now that all preliminary steps can be completed as quickly as possible prior to the start of building works on the two projects.”
A delighted Councillor O’Sullivan also confirmed that the new Gaelscoil building project had been advanced to the planning and design stage. Mr. O’Sullivan met with Minister Mary Hanafin last February to inform her of the concerns both of parents and Board of Management and met with the Minister again more recently.
Gaelscoil Chloch na gCoillte’s days in a variety of temporary accommodation in different locations will end with the construction of a new purpose built school building, on the site at Beechgrove, Tawnies Lower, Clonakilty.
Since it first opened in 1994, the school has grown rapidly and now serves 111 families with 230 students on the school roll.
By the school’s inclusion in the Department of Education’s School Building and Modernisation Programme 2007, the Gaelscoil’s future is assured and Mr. O’Sullivan was extremely pleased for students, teachers and parents with Minister Hanafin’s announcement.
