West Cork Sports Grants

Christy O’Sullivan, Fianna Fail South West candidate, was delighted that many West Cork sporting clubs were recipients of the lottery grants announced last week by Mr. John O’Donoghue, T.D., Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism. Mr. O’Sullivan, who had made personal representations on behalf of many of the organisations stated, “Sport is of great importance across the whole community of West Cork and I am pleased that the spread of these funding grants will underpin the strength and future of sporting activities in the area.”

Ballinacarriga and Lisbealad Development Co Ltd. received €200,000 which will help the members of the local community association build a badly needed indoor facility to facilitate an all year round sports programme. With the increase in population, a new group of enthusiastic members have emerged with progressive ideas. Main sporting activities are GAA hurling and football, camogie, ladies football and athletics. It is proposed to build a hall of full size in dimensions capable of accommodating all sports.

Mr. O’Sullivan also welcomed the announcement of a grant of €180,000 for Valley Rovers GAA Club. This funding will enable future plans, which include the building of permanent dressing rooms at Brinny, floodlighting of playing pitches at Brinny and the development of an all-weather playing surface in Innishannon, to get underway.

Other organisations receiving grants included Ból Chumann na hEireann, €250,000; Kilmacabea GAA Club, €175,000; Bantry Blues GAA Club, €170,000; Carbery Rangers GAA Club, €140,000; Adrigole Family Resource Centre, €100,000; Kilmeen and Kilbree GAA Club, €96,000; Drinagh Rangers A.F.C., €80,000; Clonakilty Community Sports Association, €75,000; Ballymartle GAA Club, €70,000; Skibbereen Sports Centre, €60,000; Beara Sports Hall, €40,000; Castlehaven Community Council, €40,000; Kinsale Community Council, €40,000; Kinsale Community Tennis Club, €40,000; Bandon Rugby Football Club, €30,000; Baltimore Sailing Club, €25,000; Ahakista Rowing Club, €15,000; Schull Yawl Rowing Club, €5,000.
