These are the two big industries in Cork South West. In agriculture too many small and medium holdings are now unviable, resulting in farmers being forced from the land. Smaller units should be helped and encouraged to diversify. An example could be agri-tourism. The fishing industry is quite clearly demoralised in Cork South West. It is imperative that a consultation process is adopted and people on the ground are listened to, so as to find out the difficulties they face and then act on this.
Especially for the vulnerable elderly people living in rural areas. This also applies to people with physical or learning difficulties. There needs to be an increase in Community Care bed capacity. Medical cards should be available on receipt of a non-contributory pension.
We need to continue to improve on our waste management. Bring sites must be made adequate to serve the people of the area and be managed efficiently. We must protect our water supplies and also need to ensure that all of us contribute to energy efficiency in our homes.
Young people are still leaving West Cork. Small local industry, suited to the area and sustainable for the future should be made the priority for all agencies responsible for job promotion. A task force should be set up to examine the difficulties faced, and how they can be overcome. There should be no reason why tax incentives could not be made available in West Cork similar to that available in the Shannon region.
Better infrastructure for tourism related industry. The development of our rivers, lakes and marine activities so that West Cork can be seen at it’s very best. This development must not endanger the unique beauty of where we live, but promote the natural amenities of West Cork.
It is vital for Cork South West that the N71 receives adequate funding to be realigned, to allow proper access to West Cork. Water and sewage schemes that seem to progress at the slowest pace, need to finally get done.
