12 Million Investment for Castletownbere Harbour for 2007

Christy O’Sullivan, FF Canndidate for Cork South West expressed his satisfaction with John Browne T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Marine & Natural Resources announcement of the allocation of €12 Million euro for the construction of a new quay at Castletownbere Fishery Harbour Centre. This is the single most significant new project being undertaken this year.

The development of the harbour will allow for larger vessels carrying deeper draft and will accommodate all of the new modern vessels which have entered the Castletownbere fleet.

”The enhancement of our harbours and coastal infrastructure are vital to ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for the Irish seafood industry “. said Cllr. O’Sullivan.

Castletownbere will also benefit from 150,000 euro towards effluent treatment which is a huge concern for the people living and visiting the area and also the allocation of 200,000 euro for Slipway & mainland Quay development.

The total announced yesterday for new Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Projects around the country amounted to funding of €33.32 Million euro.

In addition to the funding of the five main Fishery Harbour Centres the 2007 programme also proposes significant expenditure on small harbours. They are those harbours around our coastline under Local Authority control which supplement and underpin the activities undertaken in our larger harbours.

Smaller harbours in our constituency that have benefited from the funding are:
Cape Clear: 200,000 euro re: Research for development options;
Crookhaven: 550,000 euro re: Phase 1 Pier Development
and Garnish: 227,539 re: Redevelpment of pier.

There are however many issues facing local fishermen here in West Cork and I will be working towards further investment of this nature, to alleviate the difficulties encountered daily.
